In Hitchcock’s Vertigo, the main character, John “Scottie” Ferguson has a severe case of vertigo caused by high altitudes. If Mr. Ferguson looks down from a place of an elevated stature, he becomes almost instantly dizzied and disoriented. Although the film capitalizes on Scottie’s infirmity, the film itself is meant to give the audience a “vertigoish” sensation through the use of a twisting and entwined story line, carefully planned camera angles, and dialogging which changes course several times throughout the work. The viewer is swept from scene to scene, which rapidly changes his or her opinions every few minutes. John Ferguson is taken on a wild ride wedged tightly between fear, insanity, and breakdown. From woman to woman and emotional state to emotional state, Ferguson is trapped in a seemingly never-ending, spinning, spiral downwards. Both of these terms consist of such a very wide variety of disciplines and areas of study that it is almost impossible to make any conclusions involving all aspects. The prevailing atmosphere of a good portion of the nineteenth century theatre in Europe was the light of Romanticism. Extravagance was the watchword. Extravagant entertainment, extravagantly contrived plots and characters, extravagant displays in acting and personality traits took the new audiences to a never-never land of make believe. Plays ostensibly founded on historical fact bent those facts to a thesis or a point of view; plays ostensibly rooted in contemporary life generally carried both situation and character to the extremes of virtue and vice. Postmodernism is something that gets everywhere but no one can quite explain what it is. Variously described as ‘a con’, the kiss of death to any art form, high or low and the new perspective on life and the human condition that is sweeping across the globe, postmodernism has generated an enormous amount of academic and lay discussion in recent years. It is regularly profiled in Quality newspapers and magazines; it has entered popular parlance as a fashionable euphemism for subversive, ironic or chaotic: it has affected almost every arena of cultural and artistic endeavor (music, film, fashion, drama, dance. architecture, literature, television etc.); and it has infiltrated the A to Z of academic disciplines, albeit with varying degrees of success.
