Born on 22nd January 1561, Francis Bacon remains as a prominent philosophical advocate and a practitioner of scientific revolution. The students, especially of arts, literature and science find him inspiring and worth exploring figure. However, delving into a personality and the works of such a person is not a cakewalk. To be able to explain and analyze his work, his mind frame and his philosophy, you need to attach yourselves to the environment, society, culture, and the influence that he was the product of.

During the Republics first century, American law held that all white people had equal rights to the benefits of American civilization. Some distinctions were made between citizens and non-citizens: only citizens had the right to vote, and only a native-born citizen could become president, for example. For white people, however, legal access to American citizenship was virtually unrestricted. Potential immigrants might not be able to afford the passage to the United States, but once they were here, the law (if not necessarily the residents) welcomed them; naturalization was theirs for the asking. The law did not intrude on people’s rights to travel, to change their residence or to decide their own destiny. An important consequence was that whites who arrived on American territory were automatically subject to the protection of the American Constitution and laws. (more…)

The prevailing atmosphere of a good portion of the nineteenth century theatre in Europe was the light of Romanticism. Extravagance was the watchword. Extravagant entertainment, extravagantly contrived plots and characters, extravagant displays in acting and personality traits took the new audiences to a never-never land of make believe. Plays ostensibly founded on historical fact bent those facts to a thesis or a point of view; plays ostensibly rooted in contemporary life generally carried both situation and character to the extremes of virtue and vice. Even the so-called well-made play was a Romantic effusion. Theatre architecture remained largely rooted in the past; stage decoration was intricate and often unrealistic. (more…)

…1) The product, a digital personal weight scale, allows consumers to control their weight at home. Especially, weight scales benefits people who are on a diet and people who suffer from obesity. The product is a device which integrates a scale and a digital component. The use of the integrated system is expected to make it more convenient for people to manage their weight. More expensive equipment offered more substantial computational capacity, and both graphical and digital displays and print-outs. The product meets the consumers needs involving a wide audience of potential buyers: professional sportsmen, individual buyers, shaping and sports clubs, etc. (more…)

Articles Review
The article “Strategic Giving for Entrepreneurs” describes how a small entrepreneurial company (MA&A Group) decided to allocate some part of the company resources to charity. It was a risky decision but the managers of the company planned strategically. The events took place when the company just started its activities and had problems with recruiting and retaining employees. Therefore, the company leaders established partnerships with charitable organizations. So, MA&A group initiated volunteer program for the employees. The workers of the company had opportunities to be involved in charitable activities. (more…)

The article “Down and Out in Discount America” by Lisa Featherstone deals with the issues of corporate social responsibility and consumer behavior. Сorporate social responsibility means a company’s commitment to minimizing or eliminating any harmful effects and maximizing its long-run beneficial impact on society. It includes such areas of responsibility as obeying laws and ethical norms and treating employees fairly. A socially responsible consumer would avoid buying products from companies that harm society and actively seek out products from companies that help society. (more…)

No one is perfect is one of the most significant themes of “The Princess Bride” by Goldman. There are three main points which support that point of view. First of all, the author uses many examples to demonstrate that life is not always just; very often events do not correspond to the usual scheme of events in a fairy tale. Second, Goldman believes that love will persevere through anything; however, even true love cannot be perfectly honest and pure. Third, the author shows that fairy tale characters cannot necessarily be classified as positive and negative. (more…)

The Salton Sea, sometimes called “California’s crown jewel of avian biodiversity”, is notable for the outstanding variety of bird species, exceeded only by the Texas Gulf Coast. Sadly, this exquisite landscape is now endangered as California loses wetlands, the birds’ natural habitat at the most alarming rate in the nation. As Milton Friend, Executive Director of Salton Sea Science Subcommittee, “more than 90 percent of the wetland acreage within California present at the time of colonization of the United States has been converted to other forms of landscape, primarily agriculture and urban development”. The major legal aspect related to DC Snipers case is the issue of death penalty. Thus, there was controversy whether John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo who were serial killers involved in the case should receive the death penalty. Even though John Lee Malvo was only 17 he could still get the death penalty in Maryland and Virginia.
Those who support capital punishment have three major arguments. First, capital punishment should be justified because it serves as deterrence of crimes. In other words, fear of death causes people to deter from committing crimes. (more…)

Machiavelli is principally known for his writings, “The Prince” composed in 1513 and dedicated to Lorenzo de’ Medici in 1515-16, printed in 1531 and “The Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livy”, 1513-17. “The Prince” is called one of the most radical books in the history, because the ideas expressed by Machiavelli differ greatly from the previous philosophical tradition running form Plato and Aristotle to Aquinas. “The Prince” is a kind of a textbook for those who want to maintain power and gain control. The book consists of 26 chapters with a separate plot development. (more…)

From ancient time, the question of “a Self” has been the major concern in philosophical thought. Philosophers and political figure, clergy and common people have tries to answer the questions “Who am I?”, “What is a Self?” and “What factors make the life good or bad?”. Still, there is no single opinion about the good life. Every epoch creates its own values and moral rules changing our understanding about a self and the good life. (more…)

An Artist Shaped by its Time
Historical events usually can help the in-born leaders to reveal their talents. However, as world practice showed, historical circumstances may also be helpful enough to shape the image of an artist. France may be a good example to prove how French revolution eventually provided a good material for its future artists. David and François-Pascal-Simon Gérard are good examples of prominent French artists who made the historical events and outstanding historical figures the basis of their future works. (more…)

In the recent years the feminists’ beliefs have substantially spread throughout the country among female part of the population. Proclaiming equal opportunities and equal rights, prophets of feminism went far beyond establishing deep conviction in the heart of each woman that changes both in appearance and behavior are harmful and not necessary. Every woman should remain as she is. Amanda Fazzone, prominent journalist, is one of those who believe and convince others that beauty images drawn from media are false. However, what is really fake is the feminists’ idea that women shouldn’t aspire to the beauty images they are given from outside and refute any changes to improve their own self. (more…)
