The article “Strategic Giving for Entrepreneurs” describes how a small entrepreneurial company (MA&A Group) decided to allocate some part of the company resources to charity. It was a risky decision but the managers of the company planned strategically. The events took place when the company just started its activities and had problems with recruiting and retaining employees. Also, the managers of the company have discovered hidden talents in some employees (e.g. leadership skills). Besides, the employees started to have more motivation to work. Moreover, allocating resources to charity became an excellent marketing tool for the company. More people in the community became familiar with MA&A Group; the visibility has increased and the company sales went up.
The article “Hurricane Economics” assesses the economic effect of hurricane Katrina and describes the allocation of resources after the hurricane. We learn from the article that the government plans to spend $62.3 billion to help those people who live in the affected area to rebuild their houses. However, the author of the article believes that this decision about the allocation of resources is not strategically logical. Thus, the replacement of the destroyed property will not help to lift the economy of the country and that can be explained by the old “broken window fallacy”. Breaking windows is advantageous for glaziers because it creates jobs for them but the owners of the property will suffer damages because they paid money to glaziers for repairing windows instead of spending their money on something more enjoyable.
The same situation exists with financing short-term recovery and repair related to hurricane Katrina. Government funding can help those residents who live in the affected area to rebuild their houses; however, it’s not the appropriate allocation of resources because the repair of houses will be financed by insurance; therefore, it’s more reasonable for the government to concentrate on financing the repair of public infrastructure.
