A research paper is usually given to you at the University or graduation level. It’s a crucial paper and it therefore requires you to be elaborate and to-the-point at the same time. Formatting a research paper is more than just knowing that you should begin with an introduction, place the body of the paper in the middle, and end either with the conclusion or a bibliography page. To format a research paper correctly, you have to go far beyond the bounds of simply setting up the parts of your paper in the correct way and focus on the smaller details, such as; alignment, font, line-spacing, and other easily forgettable details. Read on to learn the different format styles available.
Students can correctly format research papers by following these simple guidelines:
- Learn the different formats required for the different parts of the research paper. i.e. the title will be centered
and made bold; the abstract and the body will be justified and usually have a 1.5 line spacing; the references will always have a single line spacing and also Italics will be included where necessary.
- Page numbers should be half an inch from the top and flush with right margin.
- Indent paragraphs half an inch in from margins and maintain a half inch margin on all edges.
- Use bold and italic fonts appropriately, i.e. make titles, chapter headings, table headers and captions bold and certain scientific names, court cases, works of art and even some quotations should be in Italics.
- Always ask for clarification if there is any uncertainty regarding a particular instructor’s requirements.
There is a number of different styles used to format research papers in different areas worldwide. These include; the American Psychological Association (APA) style, the Modern Language Association (MLA) style, the Chicago/ Turabian style, the Columbia Guide to Online Style (CGOS), the Council of Biology Editors (CBE) style and the Harvard referencing style. However, the most commonly used styles when learning how to write a research paper are the APA, the MLA and the Harvard referencing styles.

The APA (American Psychological Association) style is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. Its general guidelines require that the paper should be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″) with 1″ margins on all sides. 10-12 pt size should be used with Times New Roman font or a similar font. A page header at the top of every page which includes the first two or three major words from the title and the page number should also be included.
Referencing in the APA style, you need to use the last name of the author and the year of publication if you are citing a summary or a paraphrase of another source’s information in in-text citations. If you are citing a quote, you also need to add the page number. On the reference page, all sources are alphabetized by the last name of the first author. The authors’ first names are noted only by their first initial followed by a period.
The MLA format for documentation is widely used in the humanities, especially in writing on language and literature. In fact, it’s known to be simpler than other styles and features brief parenthetical citations in the text, keyed to an alphabetical list of works cited that appears at the end of the work. MLA research papers also include a page header but it includes your last name and the page number. When it comes to referencing, the MLA and APA citation guidelines are not much different. Both include in-text citations and both require resources to be alphabetized on the reference page. With MLA, however, the in-text citations include the author’s last name and the page number. In the reference page, the last name is listed first (this is also the case with APA) but the first name is written out in its entirety.
The Harvard format is a citation style in which partial citations (such as Smith 2010, p. 1) are enclosed within parentheses (round brackets) and embedded in the text, either within or after a sentence, as opposed to the footnote style. They are accompanied by a list of the full citations in alphabetical order in an end section, which is usually called “References,” “Reference list” or “Works cited”. The header, in this format, is similar to the APA style header; it contains a short description of the title and the page number.

Most students are buzzing with ideas and energy, looking forward to writing a perfect university research paper. However, it can all very easily turn into a disaster when the paper is incorrectly formatted. First of all; with wrong formatting, readers will tend to assume that your research is also incorrect and this gives the assessor an easy excuse to give you a lower grade. Furthermore, you stand at a risk of having your research paper rejected because of insufficient data, inadequate research or ineffective writing and formatting style. In fact, in some strict institutions, incorrect formatting can lead to disqualification or general failure; students lose months of research.
- Always keep an eye on the settings. Ensure your margins, page numbers, et al. are formatted similarly through the whole research paper.
- Even though you are writing scientific reports, it is essential to the research paper format that your grammar and spelling are correct and readable. (Use spell-check).
- Most institutions, when starting the report writing process, will give you instructions on what is the acceptable research paper format. However, this style can vary so ask your supervisor if you’re not sure about it.
- If illustrations such as graphs are included in your essay, they should take up a full page and be numbered as diagrams 1, 2 etc. They should be referred to by these numbers in the body of the text.
- First of all, make sure that the subject or topic you choose is relevant and also contestable. This keeps the readers interested.
- Be organized. Review the prompt for your final paper and any guidelines for the research paper format your instructor has required you to use before you start.
- Make sure that you have allotted page numbers to each page of your research so that you don’t find it difficult to prepare the table of contents.
- Start each chapter with a new page. This will improve your work presentation and the different chapters will be easy to find.
- Finally, always remember to ask for clarification if there is any uncertainty regarding a particular instructor’s requirements.
